My Personal Outlook on the Telecom Industry

In today's world, where safety, health, education, communication, self-expression, and numerous other benefits of modern times stem from connectivity, our global community faces its biggest challenge: ensuring widespread and reliable connectivity in the years to come.

Over the past five years, the telecommunications industry, alongside its customers, has weathered a perfect storm. This storm, driven by changing business models among mobile operators, shifts in knowledge centers, and increased costs of telecommunications infrastructure, is pushing our global community to a critical juncture.

To enjoy a 5G (or better) connection, customers will increasingly need to not only use the most advanced smartphones, but also live in urban areas with durable infrastructure.

How did this perfect storm arise, and what are its consequences?

Years of declining business have forced mobile operators to cut manpower, leading to a loss of core knowledge. Consequently, telecommunications companies like Nokia and Ericsson have slowed their innovation efforts, focusing more on maintenance services required by mobile operators. This situation was further exacerbated when private equity funds began purchasing cellular infrastructure from operators, further shifting the business mindset and affecting how knowledge and innovation are cultivated.

The result of this perfect storm is a new telecommunications ecosystem with diminished motivation and innovation to solve problems beyond the standard formula. This means that high-quality cellular coverage is never a guarantee - even if you have it, it can be lost, whether you live within a population of ten thousand or ten million. This issue is even more pronounced for those with unique needs.

What will happen in a few years when smartphones complete the transition to a 5G-only standard? The impact of diminished accessibility and connectivity will be felt by many groups within our global community.

It is clear to me that our global community faces significant connectivity challenges. Connecting communities without access to mobile coverage, or those disconnected due to external forces, requires innovative solutions to bridge the gap.
